What is vitamin B6?

‘Vitamin B6’ is the generic name for six compounds (vitamers) with vitamin B6 activity. They are all water-soluble molecules the first of which was isolated in 1934.

Why does it matter to me?

  • Interestingly recent evidence suggests that vitamin B6 contributes towards maintaining good cardiovascular health and may also reduce the risk of developing certain forms of cancer1.

  • Vitamin B6 also contributes towards the production of healthy red blood cells which are vital for transporting oxygen to the organs of your body. Therefore, vitamin B6 can reduce tiredness and fatigue2.

  • This important vitamin has been shown to be vital to produce cysteine which is a component of keratin, a protein that is used by your body to generate healthy hair3.

  • Vitamin B6 has been shown to reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood. Although controversial, research suggests that elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood can increase the likelihood of suffering from cardiovascular conditions4. Therefore, vitamin B6 may contribute towards the maintenance of good cardiovascular health5.

  • Vitamin B6 is important to maintain a healthy immune system6 and helps to provide energy to the cells of your body.

  • It is also important in producing healthy red blood cells and may reduce the risk of suffering from depression and other damaging psychological conditions7.

What happens if I don’t get enough?

Because of its importance to immune system functions even a mild deficiency can increase the likelihood of acquiring a broad range of infections6.

Recent research has implicated mild vitamin B6 deficiency as a risk factor in the development of damaging psychological conditions such as depression and certain forms of cancer7,8.

How vitamin B6 reacts with:

Coenzyme Q10: Vitamin B6 is essential for us to produce Coenzyme Q10. Recent studies have indicated a beneficial relationship between these two molecules and the maintenance of good cardiovascular health9.

Niacin: Adequate vitamin B6 levels in the body reduce the need for eating foods that contain niacin10.
