Isoflavones / phytoestrogens

Health benefits of Isoflavones / phytoestrogens:
There is a lot of interest in isoflavones, (mainly found in soy products), for the prevention of breast and prostate cancer along with relieving the symptoms of menopause

The Worlds Science

See the bottom of this page for the ingredients highest in soy isoflavones.

What are isoflavones?

Isoflavones are plant compounds in soy that can produce an estrogen like effect in our bodies1.

Why does it matter to me?

There are numerous continuing studies into the health benefits of isoflavones and whilst some of the results are conflicting, there is evidence that diets with good amounts (more than 10mg per day) of soy isoflavones may have considerable health benefits.

Soy isoflavones form dietary intake may contribute to a reduced risk of hormone associated cancers such as breast cancer2.

Soy isoflavones may contribute to a reduced risk of the re-occurrence of breast cancer3.

Evidence that soy isoflavones reduce the risk of post menopausal osteoporosis is not consistent or strong4.

There is some evidence from a Cochrane review that supplementation with genistein (a soy isoflavone) reduces the incidence of hot flushes in menopausal women, but any contribution made by dietary intake was inconclusive5.

How much should I have?

In the absence of an RDA we have created a CYF starting guideline of 10mg per day. Members can set their own target amounts.
