Natural sugars

Health benefits of Natural sugars:
Natural sugars are those sugars occurring naturally in ingredients ranging from bananas to peas, and are not thought to be detrimental to human health in the same way as free or added sugars

The Worlds Science

What are natural sugars?

Natural sugars are those sugars that occur naturally in fruit and vegetables, and form part of the integral structure of a natural ingredient such as a banana.

Are natural sugars bad for me?

Natural sugars are 'intrinsic' or an 'integral part' of the overall structure of a foodstuff, and not thought to carry the same risk to human health as the 'added' sugars, present in processed foods, sweets and soft drinks.

The general advice is that while fruits and honey are high in natural sugars, in particular fructose, this would only become harmful in high doses such as too much fruit juice.

How much should I have?

The NHS advice is that total sugar intake should not exceed 10% of our total calorie intake so for an average adult this would be around 50 grams made up of both natural and added sugars.
