Dr Who's not the only one

Inhabitants of the planet Gallifrey have the biological ability to regenerate; they are also in possession of a Tardis and can time travel. So far Gallifrey’s most famous prodigy Dr Who has regenerated 11 times.

Regenerate a mere 11 times! Planet earth inhabitants are way ahead of that!

Every human on our amazing planet regenerates on a daily basis. Every second millions of your cells are being born to replace the millions that are dying off, in fact by the time you finish reading this sentence, 50 million of your cells will have died and been replaced by new ones!

Order of regeneration

We are made up of roughly 37.2 trillion cells that’s 37,200,000,000,000 individual cells all of which clump together in the various arrangements that make up the major components of your body, for example:

On the outside:

• Your skin regenerates every 3 weeks - 1,390 times in a lifetime
• Your nails regenerate every 6 months – 160 times in a lifetime
• Your hair regenerates every 4 years – 20 times in a lifetime

On the inside:

• The lining of your intestines regenerate every 2 days – 14,600 times in a lifetime
• Your taste buds regenerate every 10 days – 2,920 times in a lifetime
• Your red blood cells regenerate every 4 months – 240 times in a lifetime
• Your liver regenerates every 5 months – 192 times in a lifetime
• Your lungs regenerate once a year – 80 times in a lifetime
• Your skeleton regenerates every 10 years – 8 times in a lifetime
• Your heart regenerates every 20 years or so - 3-4 times in a lifetime

That’s a total of nearly 20,000 regenerations in a lifetime without ever entering a Tardis, eat your heart out Dr Who (but only every 20 years or so).

Throughout the 2,522,880,000 seconds or so that we are alive your cells are coming into existence and dying off and this process is very carefully controlled so that we always have the right number of each type to keep the constant process of regeneration alive.

Fuel for your regeneration

The fuel and ‘information’ for this regeneration is of course sunlight, water, air and FOOD.

Food contains the information your body needs to keep your regeneration on track and fighting the process of oxidation or ageing. As human beings we go ‘rusty’ and need constant cleaning and patching up to keep going.

We need a constant daily supply of the nutrients that enable your cells to regenerate without the distortions that lead to disease, so how do we ensure this supply? By keeping a food diary.

Keep a food diary

If you’re not keeping a food diary yet, it’s really simple and the best thing is the CheckYourFood diary highlights in a simple traffic light system what you're doing great on and what you need more of.
