With more and more of us with elderly parents, we worry if they’re eating well and are terrified to get the sort of call we got on Christmas day 2017. “Come quick mum’s been rushed to hospital!” 

Here’s mums’ story:

Not the present I wanted!

On Christmas day 2017 I started to feel very ill with nausea and chest pains on top of the chest infection I already had, an hour later and I find myself in hospital, in Nottingham, being scanned and tested and feeling very, very poorly, and at 87 years old I wondered is this the end for me?

I was diagnosed as having had a heart attack along with Noro virus and pneumonia and was kept in hospital for 10 days. I left the hospital to go home in a very vulnerable state!

8 months later I was on a cruise with my daughter-in-law enjoying the food, the entertainment and the sights! That's us in the picture.

What happened in between?

Well my son suggested that he and his wife cook me five main meals a week, all laced with the most nutritious ingredients, using for all the ingredient choices and analysis. They made a month’s supply at a time and filled my freezer!

I enjoyed meals from duck parmentier to vegetable tajine all conveniently frozen in tin foil cartons, that I just emptied onto a plate and into the microwave (food doesn’t stick to tin foil).

My son made sure that I was meeting and exceeding all my recommended daily amounts (RDAs) for all vitamins minerals and getting plenty of phytochemicals (plant nutrients) each week.

I also have snacks everyday including cheese, eggs, nuts, seeds and dark chocolate to top up any nutrients I’m missing in the meals.

Getting stronger and stronger

My health and mobility began to re-build very quickly and my immune system became stronger and stronger.
By April my daughter-in-law saw that I was getting stronger and suggested that I tick the Norwegian cruise off my bucket list. I jumped at the chance and it was added incentive to keep getting better.
In August we had 10 fantastic days on a cruise, with me walking further than I have for years!

I took a fall

Perhaps the strongest test of my health was Christmas 2018 when I returned home from a family celebration only to take a severe fall hitting a small table on the way down and sending my TV flying!

I was convinced that I must have done some serious damage, but I managed to get myself up and into bed. The next day I felt fine and suffered only minor bruising, I was amazed, 20 years ago I would have been black and blue all over and flat out in bed for days!


Jump forward another year and a half and I can’t believe how well I am; my sons are amazed; they haven’t seen me this healthy for years.

I’ve learnt what to shop for (online shopping is a godsend) and eat to ensure that I stay as strong and healthy as possible. My son is still making my meals, but if they run out, I’m now confident that I’m eating well. This has been especially useful whist isolated for Covid 19 when he couldn't see me.

I went on holiday to the South of France three times last year and I can’t remember the last time I was ill….

Oh yes, that would be Christmas 2017!
